The church at San Juan Parangaricutiro was even more interesting than I expected. It is more than just one tower as is written everywhere. The flow struck the stone church sideways but was not able to push over the whole structure. A small portion of the nave (where the crucifix hangs) and more impressively the two towers and main entrance remain. One of the towers was never completed and so is just a stub. This section of the church is something to see. The jagged black lava totally surrounds the structure and nearly completely fills the doorway. On the volcano side the lava it is mounded up twice as high where it bunched up against the stones of the church. |
