Start Destination Daily Miles / Total

I'm laying out on an old woods road on Jenkins Ridge. I'm near the Parkway an an overlook which is great but there isn't any water so my food choices are limited. I do have some wine which I bought at the gas station/grocery store at Soco Gap so I'm in good shape here and I am happy with this camp. No rain last night or today. And it warmed up as a bonus. This morning's bummer was that when I opened my reserve water some tiny little bugs that crawled under the cap fell inside. I didn't need it so I dumped it all. More water was just down the trail.

There was a new trail (more recent than the guidebook) that brought me parallel to the Parkway for awhile. Then I came upon an area of confusion. There wasn't a blaze to be seen. I chose some new trail as I figured it was new MST footbed and I was right. It was so new they hadn't painted the white circular blazes yet. It was the MST because those letters had been cut into a number of logs. Obviously with the many log steps and rock work it was an impressive effort by what was probably a volunteer trail crew. Sadly for me the new trail ran out in the woods. Still it was flagged with blue ribbon and trees had been cut. They just hadn't finished it. I carried on through the undulating woods and got to a spot where an old homestead had been. It is right next to the Parkway but not visible from it. Just a little beyond that the flagging continued but crews hadn't been through with chainsaws. Okay enough of that. Time to exit to the road which it turns out had some white blazes painted along the side. Back on track.

The rest of the day was spent on the shoulder of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It somehow felt right to finish up with some more road walking after so much earlier in the trip. I made it to and through Soco Gap where I garbaged up on junk calories. US 19 passes through there then heads back up, up, up into the mountains. This part had two tunnels for me to go through. I walked through with a broken piece of reflective barrier to increase my visibility to cars. The tunnels are short however and it really wasn't needed.
