Red's Meadow - Deer Creek Ford 18 June 2003 Day 6 Miles: 9.7/70.3 Last night's changes to today's schedule worked out marvelously. Right after we paid for our site (a guy from Red's Meadows pointed out that we had forgotten to pay) Tom and I walked out to the bus stop on the road. I left my pack there with Tom and returned through the Postpile back to the JMT. I quickly hike the few JMT miles around the Meadow and met up with Tom at the resort store. This postponed abusing my feet with my pack's weight for an hour and a half. While at the store we garbaged up on snacks. Tom's plans changed also. Besides taking care of my slackpack, he changed his exit point to Mammoth Pass and Horseshoe Lake instead of Duck Pass. We were concerned that the snowpack might be bad after Deer Creek which would turn the 17+ miles back to his car into a death march for him. We were able to hike four miles together through a 1992 burn area, past two volcanic cinder cones, and upper Crater Meadow before splitting up. We also foraged some more wild onions. Yummy. I did not hike much further. My plan is to do a short day and rest my feet. Tomorrow I plunge back into the snow. I stopped next to the creek here around 15:30. I rinsed out all my clothes and snacked. I start early in the morning. Thanks to an extra day of food from Tom, I have an extra day to reach Vermilion Valley Resort. It is time for me to check the dryness of my clothes and think about supper. -G |
