Emerald Lake - Red's Meadow 17 June 2003 Day 5 Miles: 15.4 / 60.6 Good mileage but not all of it was on the JMT. Tom and I, especially I, also punished our feet because we were walking on wet, wrinkled feet all day. I've been walking in wet feet for 2.5 days. Our day started nicely. Tom and I packed up and hiked out at 07:00. Photo opportunities abounded around Garnet Lake with Banner Mountain as the backdrop. Climbing up away from Garnet Lake was slow because of the snow cover but the snow was still frozen so it provided good footing. I even used my ice axe. Following Garnet we had two more small lakes and passes which were mostly snowfree. Then there was a long down to Devil's Postpile National Monument. Throughout the day I kept rotating pairs of socks as they became wet. One pair drying on the pack and another becoming wet in the boots. Devil's Postpile is not all that amazing. Here at Red's Meadow Campground there are geothermally heated showers. I am clean! Met some other northbound JMTers here too, but I probably won't see them again. They are taking one of their number off the trail tomorrow, and I will be hiking on. Garrett is a generous fellow and shared some treats with me including a bunch of wild onions that I will add to my next couple meals. Tom and I changed our plans for tomorrow. Hope everything works out. Who am I kidding? I am a firm believer that everything always works out for me on the trail. |
