I'm having trouble getting back on mountain time! Partying in town takes a few days on the trail to recover. Another late start but at least I found the trail right away. I started off bushwacking and found it less than 5 minutes from camp. Unfortunately Alder Creek Trail doesn't get much traffic and even less maintenance. It was full of blown down trees that required lots of time and energy to pass. Suck. Alder Creek Trail became Dallas Trail and rounded North Pole Mountain. There were only occasional blow downs but the trail is plagued with unmarked junctions. I even had to take out the map and compass. It isn't for the casual hiker. I did some good miles and made it to the Blue Lakes Trailhead. At the sign-in I found out just how off my map mileage is. Someone had helpfully posted a page from a guidebook showing the distances. I had measured from Blue Lakes TH to Ouray as 10.1 miles but the guidebook quoted 9 miles just to the Burn Ski Hut. Looks like I'm shorting myself 5 miles and probably have the other days too. So I have a full day of hiking into Ouray tomorrow but I think it will be easy. Lets hope for an early start so I can arrive with plenty of time to do my town chores. |
