Today's hike was short and pleasant until the storm arrived. The hostel shuttled me back to the trailhead where I left off yesterday but it was a late start. I'd guess it was noon but at least we drove through some of the rain instead of me walking through it. The forecast was 40% thunderstorm but it looked like 100% to me. Maybe I'd get lucky. The hike was fairly gentle. It was very wet out but very little snow and all the overflowing creeks were entertaining. I entered the Mt Massive Wilderness and soon encountered the spot a small avalanche had run across the trail. Lots of trees were bent over or broken off. Then a little later there was a spot where massive runoff roared across the trail. I was really enjoying the walk. Kearny park had turned into a lake and down below that Rock Creek thundered under the bridge. There was thunder in the sky also. Then the tempurature dropped and the wind picked up. I quickly put up my tent and go inside as the storm broke. The rain turned to small hail pellets. The storm didn't last long but the rain continued off and on the rest of the day so I stayed inside and went to sleep early. I guess today was meant to be my short day. |
