Canfranc Estación - Jaca
20 October 2002
Day's km: 23.5
Overall km: 326.5

My first full day in Spain. The walk seemed to take longer than it should have, but maybe I was just too relaxed or taking too many pictures. In any case, I made it to Jaca and a cheap hotel, the Conde Aznar, just fine. I would have used the pilgrim albergue but my guide did not give directions. Real nice guide I have.

Today's highlights were three. First, was the Torre de Felipe II, Espelunca or Torreta, which is a beautifully restored 16th century canon tower built for the defense of Aragon and the camino. Second was Castiello de Jaca, a fortified town. I was just walking, or limping rather, through but the Calle de Santiago was picturesque. Later, the 3rd sight was a 5,000 year old neolithic dolmen. It consisted of 4 stones - 3 walls and a roof. It was small and unassuming but still carried a sense of history. The old Ermita de San Christobal could have been the 4th great site but was a wreck and locked up. Also the water spout gave out some nasty debris filled water.

Then, finally I was in Jaca.
