Last night I used my new mini blacklight flashlight on a scorpion hunt. I was rewarded with 3 scorpion discoveries. They were all tiny. I took some pics with and without the blacklight. Amazing how they glow. I wish I had it from the start. Today's hike was short on miles but high on vertical. The North Rim is 4,000 feet higher than camp. Including a little up and down that the trail does brought the grand total to 4,200+ vertical feet for the day. This was one of the nicest big ascents I've ever done though. The trail was simply outstanding, the temps cool, and I had plenty of energy to get up the trail. I didn't even have to carry much water and I could look forward to a shower and laundry at the end! I got really lucky with the weather. There was shade early then clouds and always cool breezes. It could have been a 100 degree grind but instead it was very enjoyable. Too bad I'm stuck taking crappy 640x480 photos. Again I was amazed by the number of people doing a 1 day Rim to Rim hike/run. I'm told it's a thing out here. Afterward I walked to the North Rim Campground. To my surprise it was full except for the walk/bike in sites. The site is superb. I'm overlooking the canyon (almost looking down on Cottonwood Camp) and the last person left me a Nimbus Brewery Oatmeal Stout in the food locker. Now I'm showered and doing laundry. I'm very happy with my crossing of the GC. I really got to enjoy the experience. |
