We made the drive out to Schultz pass again this morning. This time I hiked north and bid a temporary farewell to Langdon and Flagstaff. I'll be back in a couple weeks. I decided to leave my bounce box there too. My only other real choice was to send it to Tusayon but the PO hours are so limited I didn't feel good about that. I did take a few things out of it like my town clothes. So my pack is very full.

The first half of the hike was peacefully hiking the western slopes of the San Francisco Peaks (actually a former giant volcano) at the 7,600 ft level. This is another example of the AZT being rerouted to the detriment of the hiker. It formerly took a higher elevation trail through aspens and meadows in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. I assume it was moved out of the designated wilderness because mountain bikes aren't allowed.

The second half of the hike was gaining about a thousand feet of elevation. The sky was increasingly threatening but never let out any rain. Occasionally there were glimpses into the valley below or the peaks above. I set up camp at the gorgeous meadow containing Alfa Fia Tank. This is the best looking dirt tank, basically and artificial pond, that I've seen yet. Water looks scarce ahead so tomorrow I'm leaving with everything topped off.

Oh, I saw a kaibab squirrel. It has a bushy white tail. I'll try to get a picture next time.
