Previous Day   [Today]   Next Day

Album: arizona-trail:journal:20130501

Today was a 13 hour slackpack from the top of the Rim back down to Pine. The owners of the brewery put me into contact with a local trail steward who agreed to drop me off up there so I could do the hike without carrying my usual load and enjoy the cabin another night. Joe is a super nice guy. He's even doing some shopping for me while I hike. I've just got to donate to the ATA or do some trail work for them.

It took about an hour to get to the trailhead. We took some pictures then I was off down the very steep, sandy, rocky trail. The first mile loses about 1,000 feet of elevation. Overall the trail loses 4,700+ feet going back to Pine and gains 2,700+ feet. So there is certainly an advantage to doing it in this direction. It would take me 2 days going the other way. I just hoped my foot could take the miles.

Well to make a long story short. I did it without too much trouble. There were foot issues and I'll probably take tomorrow off but all in all I'm happy with how the day went. I lost light with a couple miles to go and had to resort to my headlamp and it's frighteningly low batteries. I didn't get back to the cabin and it's shower until 9 pm. Legs and feet were sore but the hot shower helped.
